Books I loved in 2019
I’ve never been one who really liked reading. Even when I was in school, I don’t think I’ve ever read a full book for class - sad but true. Last year though, things changed. I guess I figured out the type of books I enjoyed reading and since then I’ve been unstoppable (insert nerd emoji).
Here are a few books that I’ve read last year and highly recommend:
Mrs. Everything - Jennifer Weiner
This story takes place in the 1950’s and follows the life of two sisters over decades, from childhood to adulthood. Both completely different, Jo a tomboy filled with anger and resentment, whereas her sister Bethie is the absolute opposite, the perfect girl, the golden child. The book shows how this thing called life can sometimes be hard and complicated. I’ll leave you with a quote from the book:
‘‘We lose ourselves,” she repeated, forming each word with care, “but we find our way back.” Wasn’t that the story of her life? Wasn’t that the story of Bethie’s? You make the wrong choices, you make mistakes, you disappear for a decade, you marry the wrong man. You get hurt. You lose sight of who you are, or of who you want to be, and then you remember, and if you’re lucky you have sisters or friends who remind you when you forget your best intentions. You come back to yourself, again and again. You try, and fail, and try again, and fail again.”
The Beekeeper of Aleppo - Christy Lefteri
This novel describes the life of two syrian refugees, Nuri and his wife Afra, who had no choice but to leave their family, friends and loved one’s behind to escape the war. This heartwrenching yet beautiful story accompanies them through their struggles as they make their way to the U.K to seek asylum. There’s no other way to put it, It’s simply a beautiful book.
“I wish I could escape my mind, that I could be free of this world and everything I have seen in the last few years. And the children who have survived - what will become of them? How will they be able to live in this world?”
The Unhoneymooners - Christina Lauren
Olive has always been unlucky. Her fate changes when her sister and husband to be suddenly fall ill from food poisoning at their wedding. Olive is forced to go on an all-expenses-paid (boo-hoo) ‘Honeymoon’ with her sister’s brother-in-law, Ethan, whom she despises. Light read, funny, but I’m sure you can guess how it ends!
“When I signed up for this honeymoon, I had no idea it would involve so much nudity...”
Ahhhhhhh.
That’s it guys, these are all good reads that I think you'll enjoy if you’re into novels or rom-coms type of books. I’m currently reading ‘Such a Fun Age’ by Kiley Reid. Will let you know how that one goes. I’m hoping to be able to read one book a month this year, keep you posted.
